How does Recrystallization work?
As the name implies, the process involves creating crystalline structures for a given molecule. This represents one of the purest and most concentrated forms a compound can take on. The basic principle of the crystallization process is to super saturate the solution. This is done by changing the temperature of the solution, solubility generally increases as temperatures increase. Once the solution is saturated with as much of the target compound as it can hold, the temperature is lowered thus reducing the solubility. It is at this point that the crystals precipitate and drop out of the solution, while the impurities remain in the solution.
