Since 2016, Alabama has had a very limited medical cannabis program. A licensed physician can write a patient with a qualifying condition a prescription for CBD oil. This oil can only contain up to 0.3% THC, relative to CBD. The number of qualifying conditions is extremely limited. Only patients with a rare, intractable, severe, and debilitating epileptic condition are allowed access. Recreational cannabis is still illegal. Due to the deeply conservative nature of the state, it’s likely to remain so in the near term.
