What is Fractional Distillation?
Fractional Distillation, often referred to as molecular distillation, or short path distillation, is a form of distillation used for the separation and purification of compounds. This is achieved by applying the concepts of evaporation and condensation, often referred to as distillation, in order to target specific “fractions” based on their varying boiling points. In cannabis extraction, the residual solvent and remaining light volatiles will evaporate first, followed by certain flavonoids, azulenes, and ‘head’ fractions. After this, the main fraction compromising the purest cannabinoid concentration will distill off to be collected. Followed by a tails fraction, and then any heavy terpenes or remaining compounds.
